San Francisco Chronicle:

Richmond police have found the vehicle that was carjacked at gunpoint from state Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata in North Oakland, authorities said Sunday.

The red 2006 Dodge Charger was found near the corner of Wiswall and Colette drives near Hilltop Mall in Richmond at about 11 p.m. Saturday, nine hours after the carjacking, police said. The car will be processed for evidence.

(snip)

But then the man began pulling a mask over his nose and pointed an automatic handgun at him “gangster style” - holding it sideways - before tapping it on his window and bellowing at him, “Get out of the mother- car.”

(snip)

Perata, who legally carried a concealed weapon for years because of threats against his life, said there was no firearm in his car when he was carjacked.

So, Tom Perata, among the biggest anti-gun blowhards in the Mexifornia state legislature (and that competition is fierce), has a CCW permit.

Fresh off curing his own poverty under the pretense of curing other people’s poverty, John Edwards wants to meet poverty.

Ben Smith:

Can JRE pull off a JFK, or an RFK? John Edwards plans to announce Monday that he’ll take a break from fund-raising and campaigning in early-voting states next week for a three-day, eight-state, 12-city “Road to One America” tour aimed at calling attention to poverty in the deep South, the Mississippi Delta, Appalachia and the Rust Belt. The campaign points out that none of the states he’ll visit has an early 2008 primary, and says Edwards won’t be doing rallies.

Instead, TV viewers will see Edwards in coal country, Edwards in a factory, Edwards on a farm, Edwards in a struggling neighborhood, Edwards in a school, Edwards in a health care clinic. “It’s an effort to show the rest of the country how 37 million Americans live their lives in poverty every single day,” an Edwards aide said. “It’s not only their workplaces — it’s their homes and the places they get health care.”

Perhaps Mr. Edwards can explain to them why he spends more on a haircut than their monthly household incomes, or why his garage has more square footage than their entire domiciles.

Former U.S. Senator and current Democratic Presidential Candidate John Edwards, of North Carolina, who often complains about “Two Americas,” has been benefiting from money donated by people to a foundation that he started, whose public purpose was to alleviate poverty in the “other America.”

The New York Times expose was republished in the Raleigh News-Observer, the most prominent newspaper in his home state.

Mr. Edwards joins Morris Seligman Dees in the select company of people who solved their own poverty through pretending to solve other people’s poverty.
