Many don’t want to return to N.O. subsidized housing
NEW ORLEANS — Seven out of 10 public housing residents displaced by Hurricane Katrina want to return to the city, but only a third want to go back to subsidized homes, according to a study released Thursday.
Sounds good, right? Well,
•37% of public housing households want to return to New Orleans but want Housing Choice Voucher (Section [Eight]) rental assistance for a home in the private market instead of public housing.
In other words, they’re rejecting the bread and asking for cake.

Initiative may affect election
Whoever wins the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination will have to run against both John McCain and Ward Connerly during the campaign for the White House.
McCain, it appears all but certain, will be the Republican Party’s standard-bearer. And Connerly will be the GOP’s weapon of mass distraction.
While McCain can be expected to wage a frontal attack on his Democratic opponent [I'll believe that when I see it -- Blogmeister], Connerly will mount a stealth campaign. He will champion just one issue: opposition to affirmative action.
Connerly is trying to get anti-affirmative action initiatives on the ballot in five states: Arizona, Colorado, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma. While these measures aren’t labeled as the political weaponry of the GOP, they may prove to be the party’s most effective means of combating the surging voter support for Democrats.
In other words, this op-ed writer in the SNL thinks that the Connery initiatives might swing the election toward McCain. Actually, there is some worry about just the opposite — that with McCain at the top of the ticket, this will keep conservative voters at home and take votes away from the Connerly initiatives.
But those worries are overblown. Democrats could carry the day in the states where the Connery initiatives are on the ballot, and the initiatives will all pass nevertheless. Remember Michigan 2006 — MCRI won, in spite of Democrats Granholm and Stabenow being re-elected for Governor and Senate.

About his “Lazy Missourians” rant.
As it turns out, his “only three people applied” rant was false. The employer, Fine Labs, did build and open a facility in Piedmont, in Wayne County, and did put out the Help Wanted sign. Three hundred people applied. The article does not say how many of those were hired.

Soaring crime, mass immigration…why the white working class is fearful for the future
The white working class are far more pessimistic about Britain’s future than their middle-class counterparts, a survey reveals today.
More than half said no one represented their views and that their quality of life had got worse over the past decade.
Some 71 per cent of those polled also said they thought crime rates had gone up in the past ten years, compared with 66 per cent of the middle class.
The survey was carried out by Newsnight as part of the BBC Two’s White season, which examines what it means to be white and working class today.
Special programmes include Rivers Of Blood, which looks at the legacy of Enoch Powell’s controversial speech, and The Poles Are Coming, which is billed as an “entertaining” look at the impact of Eastern European immigration.
Three points:
(1) The Daily Mail is biased toward the Tories, and thus have nothing but scorn for the only party that seems to want to do something about what this paper now admits is the problem, that being the British National Party (BNP). The reason is that the DM/Tories think that a vote for BNP means one fewer Tory vote. Actually, I think BNP growth would come rather evenly at the expense of both Labour and Tories.
(2) Why the picture of a white man holding a knife?
(3) “Impact of Eastern European immigration?” I bet the last thing a “chav” fears is being mugged by a Pole. England’s PC establishment does allow consternation over immigration, as long as it’s about white immigrants from Eastern Europe. Nary a peep is allowed about non-white immigration.
As an aside, and bringing the matter closer to home, East St. Louis, in its heyday, was heavily Polish and Eastern European. Somehow, they didn’t make East St. Louis a less desirable place, nor cause white working class anxiety. They were the prosperous white working class in East St. Louis.
