New York Legalizes Homosexual “Marriage” February 2, 2008

A panel of New York State appellate-level judges ruled that the state must recognize homosexual marriage licenses issued in states and countries that recognize gay marriage. The question in front of this panel was of a lesbian couple “married” in Canada in 2004.
This issue and the court’s ruling might induce a Federal constitutional concern. Since treaties with foreign countries are exclusively a Federal issue, I would guess that the states in the union could only recognize a foreign marriage if the Federal government recognizes them, either by treaty or by some other mechanism. I don’t know if the Federal government recognizes foreign “marriages” of homosexual couples, but my guess is that, in the height of the debate over them in the late 1990s and early this decade, and especially after the ruling by the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court in 2004 that essentially legalized them in the state, the Feds probably don’t. I could be wrong — if you can answer my question, please contact us (see the navigation bar the the top of this page).

‘Multiple’ victims in Chicago shootings
TINLEY PARK, Ill. (AP) — “Multiple” victims were found Saturday at a clothing store in a strip mall but there was no sign of the shooter, authorities said. They did not immediately confirm a report that four people had been killed.
Police Sgt. T.J. Grady said officers responding to a 911 call about a shooting at the Brookside Marketplace at about 10:45 a.m. found the shooting victims inside a Lane Bryant store in this Chicago suburb.
Grady refused to give other details at a news conference or take questions, but said the attacker had apparently left the area in the suburbs southwest of downtown Chicago.

Grady said police were looking for a black man about 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighing 230 to 260 pounds, dressed in a black waist-length winter coat, a black cap and black jeans.

Low-Income and Minority Students Can Get Paid. Everyone Else Can Just Lump It. February 2, 2008

Good Grades Pay Off - Literally
Teachers have long said that success is its own reward. But these days, some students are finding that good grades can bring them cash and luxury gifts.
(snip)
The most ambitious experiment began in September, when seven states - Arkansas, Alabama, Connecticut, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Virginia and Washington - won spots in an Exxon/Mobil-funded program that, in most cases, pays students $100 for each passing grade on advanced placement (AP) college-prep exams.
It’s an effort to get low-income and minority students interested in the courses, says Tommie Sue Anthony, president of the Arkansas Advanced Initiative for Math and Science. “We still have students who are not sure of the value, who are not willing to take the courses,” she says. “Probably the incentives will make a difference with those students.”
What about high-income and majority students? Don’t they deserve some money for doing well? And why not encourage them to do well in school and to attempt more challenging classes? Also, why this need to pay “low-income and minority students” (read: blacks and Hispanics)? If the races are truly equal, as the egalitarian quacks constantly claim, there should be no more need to pay black and Hispanic students for good grades than there is white suburban ones.

If you have nothing else to do this coming Monday, then I’m sure you can attend one of the many Rosa Parks Day ceremonies that I’m sure this state will host, thanks to our lame duck Governor.
Speaking of Missouri Republicans wanting to replace said lame duck and the civil rights agitators, don’t look for things to get any better if Jefferson City Barbie becomes Governor. From her hometown paper, the Rolla Daily News:
Steelman seeks to empower people
When State Treasurer Sarah Steelman agreed months ago to be the keynote speaker at the Rolla Chapter of the NAACP banquet held Saturday, she had no idea how the recent turn of events in Jefferson City would affect her.
Earlier Saturday, in the familiarity of her brother’s home in Springfield, Steelman announced her gubernatorial candidacy. The announcement came just four days after Missouri Gov. Matt Blunt said he would not seek a second term.
Speaking to a room of about 100 people Saturday evening at Missouri S&T’s Havener Center, Steelman, a Republican, spoke of optimism for Missourians and empowering people.
(snip)
“We are all children of God,” Steelman said. “It’s why Rosa Parks would not budge on the bus, and it’s why Martin Luther King gave his life. … Abraham Lincoln, Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King were like all of us … It’s why we must fight on. This is what our campaign is all about: Power to the People,” Steelman said.
Sorry, people, this is the rhetoric of a blue state revolutionary, not a red party gubernatorial candidate in a swing state. Yeah, empowering people and power to the people. Black people, that is. Whites need not apply.
