Michael Nutter’s Philadelphia Handstand January 7, 2008

Philadelphia has a new mayor as of today. Or is it what the city really has is just a new name?
Nutter declares crime emergency in Philadelphia
After being sworn in as the city’s 98th mayor, Michael Nutter in his first official act signed an executive order declaring a crime emergency.
The order, effective immediately, directs new police Commissioner Charles Ramsey to determine what is behind Philadelphia’s “crime crisis.”
(snip)
“I don’t think you have to be Sherlock Holmes to figure out we have a serious crime problem,” the mayor said. “We are nowhere [near] where we should be, we have a crime crisis.”
Like, duh. You think they’ll ever find the right answer? Maybe you don’t need ole Sherlock to see that you have a crime problem, but apparently you do to decipher the reason, not to mention a BS deflection shield to beat back to barbs that will be sent your way from Montgomery, Alabama when you state the reason.
The order, effective immediately, directs new police Commissioner Charles Ramsey to determine what is behind Philadelphia’s “crime crisis.”
Nutter said the order directs Ramsey, who was also sworn in to office today, to develop a plan to make Philadelphia safer.
Ramsey is to submit the plan to Nutter by January 30.
Okay, when you think of an emergency, you think of something that requires direct and relatively harsh action. But we won’t get that here — probably this “plan” will call for more gun control, more government aid, more recreation centers, more gang intervention bureaucrats, more education spending, and more hand-standing. In other words, it will be the usual tripe that comes from American big-city politicians, only with the imprimatur of an emergency declaration. Same waste in a shinier toilet.
“Today, we make change and reform real. Ladies and gentlemen the renaissance period of Philadelphia got started about a half-hour ago,” he said, as he finished with stirring words about “greatest American city turnaround in the past 50 years.”
If you read between the lines, this is a veiled insult against former mayors John “iPhone” Street and Ed Rendell before him — of course, Mr. Nutty might not want to insult the latter man too much, because he just happens to be the Governor, the chief executive of the sow whose teats the city has to suck a lot of milk from.

Richard Viguerie Says Huckabee Win is Bad News for GOP
MANASSAS, Va., Jan. 3 /Christian Newswire/ — Richard A. Viguerie, the author of Conservatives Betrayed: How George W. Bush and Other Big Government Republicans Hijacked the Conservative Cause (Bonus Books, 2006), issued the following statement regarding Mike Huckabee’s victory in the Iowa caucuses:
“Mike Huckabee’s victory in the Iowa caucuses is bad news for the Republican Party.
“Mike Huckabee is a Christian socialist. He is a good man, but with a Big Government heart. He is the most liberal of all the Republican presidential candidates on economic issues.
“Huckabee’s approach to every problem or perceived problem is to pass a law and launch another government program. If you like President George W. Bush, you’ll love Mike Huckabee.
“If, on the other hand, you’re a limited government conservative in the grand tradition of Robert A. Taft, Barry Goldwater, and Ronald Reagan, you will want to redouble your efforts to make sure Huckabee doesn’t win the Republican nomination. Four years of a Huckabee presidency would ensure that there wouldn’t be a penny’s worth of differences between the Republican Party and the Democratic Party on economic issues.
“Much has been made of Mike Huckabee’s strong stance on social issues. In the 1970s, we conservatives had two legs on our stool–economic responsibility and a strong national defense–but that wasn’t enough to win many elections. It wasn’t until we added the third leg to our stool–social issues–that conservatives were able to win elections consistently.
Don’t forget, Huckabee was the head of the *liberal* faction of the Southern Baptist Convention of Arkansas.
I think Viguerie is right — not only is he bad news for the GOP, he’ll kill the organized right-wing if he becomes President, not to mention do a lot of damage to the country at large. He’s just as liberal on race and immigration as HRC and BHO, but with the Republican and Fundagelical Christian labels, the figurative white blood cells of the right won’t materialize. And this medium speaks officially as part of those white blood cells.
