Agence France Presse:

Zimbabweans formed queues at banks on Saturday to beat a December 31 deadline to hand in a currency series phased out by the central bank.

The Reserve Bank chief Gideon Gono declared that the 200,000 Zimbabwean dollar (about eight dollars) would become worthless as he introduced three new banknotes in a bid to tackle a shortage of the local currency in the country.

This is why I don’t buy the “official” exchange rates.  If Z$200,000 is truly worth US$8, then why is such a note “worthless?”  Using my hypothesis that the real conditions are 10-15 times worse than the official figures, then the Z$200,000 corresponds to the 53-80 U.S. cents range.

It might be worse than that, because the Z$750,000 note won’t even buy a burger.

Baton Rouge Advocate:

Official: 2006 Jena school fire was arson, not related to race

JENA (AP) — The 2006 fire that badly damaged the high school in this east-central Louisiana town was set by people intending to destroy grade records and had nothing to do with the racial tension that led to a civil rights demonstration here three months ago, a law enforcement official said Friday.

LaSalle Parish Sheriff-elect Scott Franklin said six males, including three juveniles, were arrested Thursday and faced aggravated arson counts. Another two men considered suspects remained at large, he said.

“These young men were simply trying to get rid of their bad grades and to shut the school down. They failed on both accounts,” Franklin told a news conference.

Franklin said all the suspects are from Jena, and four were Jena High School students at the time of the fire. Some are black and some are white, he said.

The Nov. 30, 2006, fire destroyed several classrooms, offices and science labs. It happened a few months after the appearance of nooses in a campus tree - a move that resulted in the suspension of three white students - and a few days before a group of black students attacked and beat a white classmate.

Also remember that the noose incident and the beating three months later were unrelated.  So it turns out that everything that happened in Jena was “a series of unfortunate events” that the civil rights industry and the Paranoia-Industrial Complex made into a conspiracy.

KNXV-ABC-15 Phoenix:

ATF says more guns sent illegally south of the border

Spread across a conference table at the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in Phoenix are enough weapons to equip several car loads of drug runners.

Agents said Thursday they found the 42 weapons in a storage locker about 10 days ago. The guns were worth $250,000 in all: Belgian-made “FN” handguns, semiautomatic AK rifles and other pistols. They also found four olive boxes loaded with 50-caliber bullets — ammunition that’s big enough to take out an airplane.

“These are, quite frankly, weapons of war,” ATF special agent Tom Mangan said as he picked up an assault rifle and examined it.

(snip)

ATF officials said gun runners typically gather large caches of weapons anonymously through “straw” purchases. They might give someone $100 to go into a gun show or a Wal-Mart and buy a few rifles at a time. They might buy guns over the Internet.

You’re still obsessed with straw purchases, aren’t you?  You can’t put your minds around the fact that a lot of them, and probably most of them, are stolen in residential burglaries.

Some of those guns end up in the hands of California gangs or with coyotes herding illegal immigrants into the U.S. But Mangan said a majority of the guns are smuggled into Mexico for use by drug dealers.

Mangan said this year the ATF Phoenix office learned that about 300 assault-type weapons were brought south on one occasion, and another 200 assault-type weapons were smuggled on a separate occasion.

(snip)

The Mexican government has called on the United States to stop the flow of guns into the country, he said, but America’s firearms laws make it hard to stop gun running.

No, what makes it hard is America’s virtual open border, which the Mexican government seems to want.  The border that is open for south-to-north migration is just as open for north-to-south gun trafficking.  So they have no moral authority to complain.

However, that won’t stop them from complaining — the arrogant regime in Mexico City knows that it will get almost everything it wants from its northern neighbor, thanks to a series of successive pro-Mexican stooges in the White House.  As Vincente Fox recently said that, “Where There Is a Mexican, There Is Mexico,” the arrogant regime in Mexico City simply thinks that the new portions of Mexico north of the fiction formerly known as the USA-Mexico border should adopt Mexican gun laws.

Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox was the only Republican running for statewide office in November 2006 (and the only one period) that supported the anti-affirmative action Michigan Civil Rights Initiative (MCRI), which won itself.  Dick DeVos, who wanted Gov. Jennifer Granholm’s job, and Mike Bouchard, who wanted Sen. Debbie Stabenow’s, opposed it.  Guess who was the only Republican to win a statewide election that day.

Now, Cox is coming through again, with the official opinion that illegal aliens are ineligible for state drivers’ licenses, an opinion that reverses policy that was set by a previous Democratic state A.G.

Just imagine, in 2010, we could see Mike Cox become Governor of Michigan, J.B. Van Hollen do the same in Wisconsin, and Lou Barletta the same in Pennsylvania.  As hopeless as it seems with those states having Governors like Doyle, Granholm and Rendell (respectively), the worm looks to be turning.

Thug Incubator “Stop Snitching” DVD Sequel On The Streets December 28, 2007

Baltimore Sun:

‘Stop Snitching 2′ video promoted online
Original video highlighted culture of witness intimidation in Baltimore

The star, pot-smoking street sage Skinny Suge, is locked up in Western Maryland. The cameo celebrity, NBA all-star Carmelo Anthony, still plays for the Denver Nuggets, having bounced back from the bad publicity. And the two city cops called out by name, William King and Antonio Murray, are in federal prison, probably for the rest of their lives.

Mr. Anthony “bounced back from bad publicity” because the racial caste system in modern day professional and high-level amateur athletics turns a blind eye to this kind of behavior on the part of non-whites. If (as an example) reigning NBA MVP Dirk Nowitski appeared in a neo-Nazi video, he wouldn’t be able to “bounce back,” he would be out of a job.

Three years after the underground, profanity-laced DVD Stop Snitching became a local political prop and a national emblem of Baltimore’s crime problems, the producer, Rodney Bethea, is ready to release a sequel.

Stop Snitching 2 went on sale this week. For $9.99, plus shipping and handling, buyers can “pre-order the DVD they don’t want you to see,” Bethea’s Urly Media Web site says.

In an interview, Bethea said his intent is not to intimidate but to educate.

“What I’m doing is exposing the social conditions,” he said. “There’s a lack of information, a lack of hope and a lack of jobs. They’re closing schools and building juvenile jails. I’ve documented that mentality. Through awareness, I hope to bring forth change.”

Police officials aren’t buying it.

“The small portion of the DVD we’ve seen so far makes it pretty clear that these are not people with the best interests of the community at heart,” Sterling Clifford, a spokesman for Mayor Sheila Dixon and the police department, said in an e-mailed statement.

The trailer, which runs one minute and 19 seconds, features a middle-schooler waving a handgun and then taking a drag from a joint, and Skinny Suge (filmed before he pleaded guilty in January to first-degree assault) cussing at the city prosecutor and a congressman.

There’s also a man firing a gun into the night sky, seemingly for no reason.

It’s probably against the law in the place where this video was recorded for children of middle-school age to posess firearms, and for anyone to discharge firearms wantonly. And it’s almost certainly the case that smoking weed is illegal.

I remember a novelty news story came out a few years ago where a woman who was a convicted felon posed nude with a real handgun in a holster which was attached to a waistband she was wearing. The point of the story was that she wasn’t allowed to posess a real gun, and the ATF slapped some cuffs on her and the Federal prosecutors used the porn as evidence.

The point is that even in the realm of “artistic expression,” you can’t do anything patently illegal. Yet, this producer had children possessing guns, smoking weed, and men firing guns in the air, all as a production value. I wonder where the U.S. Attorney’s office for wherever this Stop Snitching 2 DVD was filmed is on this matter. That is unless these images were simply recordings directly from the streets, and not a matter of rehersal.

The Australian:

Tsunami aid ’spent on politics’

THREE years after Australians donated $400 million to rebuild Asian lives devastated by the 2004 tsunami, aid groups are under attack for spending much of the money on social and political engineering.

A survey by The Australian of the contributions by non-government organisations to the relief effort found the donations had been spent on politically correct projects promoting left-wing Western values over traditional Asian culture.

The activities - listed as tsunami relief - include a “travelling Oxfam gender justice show” in Indonesia to change rural male attitudes towards women.

(snip)

A World Vision tsunami relief project in the Indonesian province of Aceh includes a lobbying campaign to advance land reform to promote gender equity, as well as educating women in “democratic processes” and encouraging them to enter politics.

Also in Aceh, the Catholic aid group Caritas funds an Islamic learning centre to promote “the importance of the Koran”. This is seen as recognition of the importance of Islam in a province that has been the scene of a long-running and bloody independence struggle against the secular central Government.

St. Louis Post-Dispatch:

Alderman Gregory Carter sees himself as a street-smart lawmaker, equally comfortable shaking hands at City Hall or ferreting out trouble in the neighborhood.

There’s no place in his ward he won’t go, Carter says.

This week, though, the streets got the best of him.

Carter was assaulted at a gas station in his ward, knocked out, police say, by a man aggressively hawking movies and music discs. Carter was hit in the mouth, losing consciousness when his head struck the pavement.

(snip)

Carter said this week’s incident has led him to step up his efforts to shut down the gas station. The operator of the station, Ali Jabrani, declined to discuss Sunday’s attack, or Carter’s effort to put the station out of business.

And how was this the gas station’s fault?  If you do run every gas station out of your ward, will you be the first to complain about the “racism” of no gas stations in your ward?

Also, will you ever be able to blame criminals for crime?

So says a state judge.

St. Louis Post-Dispatch:

The teen suspected of killing a city police officer should stand trial as an adult, a judge ruled Wednesday.

St. Louis Circuit Court Judge [*****] — in an order that publicly identified the suspect for the first time — ruled that Antonio Alexander Andrews, 15, is “beyond rehabilitation under the juvenile code.”

The ruling means that Andrews, who as a minor would have been eligible for release at 21 or younger, now faces the possibility of life in prison without parole.

He is accused in the shooting Aug. 15 of Officer Norvelle Brown — a rookie patrolman who was working alone near Sherman Park. Andrews faces first-degree murder charges in the case.

He wouldn’t have faced the death penalty even without the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2003 decision — Missouri law set a minimum age of 16 at the time of the murder for such punishment.

Citing the opinion of a juvenile officer, the ruling says Andrews is “sophisticated and streetwise.” He is not a gang member, according to the ruling, but “runs with the wrong crowd from the neighborhood and is influenced too much by friends.”

In January, when Andrews was 14, he shot himself in the thigh after receiving a gun from an older friend, the ruling says. When he was arrested seven months later, he tested positive for marijuana.

Shooting yourself in the leg doesn’t sound too “sophisticated and streetwise” to me.

Since his arrest, Andrews has been detained at the city’s juvenile detention center, where he has twice been written up for being verbally disruptive. But he did maintain a B average at Griscom, the school operated inside the youth jail.

Recall that he had an 0.57 GPA in regular school settings.

Now, the big question is this — Since SLPD Chief Joe Mokwa essentially handed Andrews’s defense attorneys their arguments wrapped up in a box, glittered wrapping paper and a big red bow, will this certification as an adult make a difference?

Boom Busts Argument December 26, 2007

St. Louis Post-Dispatch:

The city’s first independent charter school opened in a weight-training gym, built on a local motivational after-school program.

A year later, founder Marshall Cohen bought a closed bank on Broadway, turned offices into classrooms, the lobby into a cafeteria and a vault into bathrooms.

Now, almost eight years later, Lift for Life Academy is more than unusual — it’s successful, too.

The school for sixth- through eighth-graders has grown from 60 students to 280 this year. Test scores show consistent, sometimes outstanding gains. And parents are slowly figuring it out.

(snip)

Lift for Life began in 2000 in its one-room Cass Avenue gym, among the burned-out brick, razor-wire and empty lots of the St. Louis Place neighborhood. They pushed weight equipment to the side. Bookshelves and filing cabinets separated classes. Cohen still can’t believe anyone agreed to attend.

(snip)

Now, while test scores aren’t nearly high enough to meet state goals, they are rising. The school’s black students — 95 percent of the student body — have surpassed St. Louis Public Schools scores in some areas.

(snip)

The school is far from perfect. An evaluation last year by a team from Southeast Missouri State took the middle school to task for more than a dozen issues — too few computers, no library catalog system, no music education program, no guidance counselor, little student-by-student test score analysis, no regular program evaluations, too few correctly certified teachers.

If you want to take this article on face value (which I don’t), then the P-D has neutered its own “education needs more money to succeed” argument.

Reuters:

Roundworms may infect close to a quarter of inner city black children, tapeworms are the leading cause of seizures among U.S. Hispanics and other parasitic diseases associated with poor countries are also affecting Americans, a U.S. expert said on Tuesday.

Recent studies show many of the poorest Americans living in the United States carry some of the same parasitic infections that affect the poor in Africa, Asia, and Latin America, said Dr. Peter Hotez, a tropical disease expert at George Washington University and editor-in-chief of the Public Library of Science journal PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases.

Writing in the journal, Hotez said these parasitic infections had been ignored by most health experts in the United States.

The reason they’re ignored is not because the victims tend to be poor, it’s because they tend to be non-white and recent arrivals — not because the “health experts” are white racists, but because they’re trying to prevent epidemiology from becoming a major subtext of the immigration issue.

Parody Lyrics (c) Earl P. Holt III
Set to the tune of “Folsom Prison Blues” by Johnny Cash

***

We should have seen this comin’; Arnold’s gone around the bend,
He’s pandered to the liberals, since, I don’t know when.
He plans to empty Folsom Prison; He wants to set them free,
That’s Twenty Thousand felons, to prey on you and me.

When I was just a young man, my daddy told me “Son,
Those moderate Republicans, don’t ever trust a one.”
Yet, I cast my vote for Arnold, I thought that he’d be strong,
When I heard what Arnold’s up to, I knew that I was wrong…

I bet there’s convicts scheming in their cells and in the loo,
How they’re gonna rob some fat bank, or stick-up me and you.
We just cannot let this happen; These scumballs can’t be free.
But the Governor’s not kidding, and that’s what worries me.

If Arnold frees these losers from their California slam,
I bet they go bafatza, and soon go on the lam.
And when they’re back in prison, this time let’s make crime pay,
Give ‘em “Boot-Camp” and baloney; now that would make my day.

Washington Post:

A Nuclear Site Is Breached
South African Attack Should Sound Alarms

An underreported attack on a South African nuclear facility last month demonstrates the high risk of theft of nuclear materials by terrorists or criminals. Such a crime could have grave national security implications for the United States or any of the dozens of countries where nuclear materials are held in various states of security.

Shortly after midnight on Nov. 8, four armed men broke into the Pelindaba nuclear facility 18 miles west of Pretoria, a site where hundreds of kilograms of weapons-grade uranium are stored. According to the South African Nuclear Energy Corp., the state-owned entity that runs the Pelindaba facility, these four “technically sophisticated criminals” deactivated several layers of security, including a 10,000-volt electrical fence, suggesting insider knowledge of the system. Though their images were captured on closed-circuit television, they were not detected by security officers because nobody was monitoring the cameras at the time.

It was underreported because reporting it might draw attention to the deleterious consequences of changing from a white apartheid government to a corrupt black government.

Fertility rate in USA on upswing

The fertility rate among Americans has climbed to its highest level since 1971, setting the country apart from most industrialized nations that are struggling with low birthrates and aging populations.

The fertility rate hit 2.1 in 2006, according to preliminary estimates released by the National Center for Health Statistics. It’s a milestone: the first time since shortly after the baby boom ended that the nation has reached the rate of births needed for a generation to replace itself, an average 2.1 per woman.

“What matters is that the U.S. is probably one of very few industrialized countries that have a fertility rate close to or at replacement level,” says José Antonio Ortega, head of the fertility section at the United Nations’ Population Division.

Spirit of Man Blog via Reuters:

Latino-Islamic Terror

(snip)

It’s undeniable that the Islamic regime of Iran is creating chaos and instability around the planet. If this new Iranian threat in Latin America in not checked right now, we can expect more disasters in that region and more death and destruction to follow. Nicaragua or Bolivia may have no diplomatic or commercial importance for the mullahs except that they can use their embassies there to train terrorist and use them as platforms to launch attacks against the United States which has a freaking open and undefended border with Mexico. Thousands of illegal aliens pour into the States through that fenceless border and one of them can be an Iranian trained terrorist willing to kill thousands of innocent Americans and make another 9/11.  [Emphasis Added]

The only way to stop this cycle of terror, violence and needless bloodshed, here and there on this planet, is to put an end to the Iranian regime and this is not going to happen as long as people don’t want to understand the gravity of the threat posed by the mullahs. It won’t happen as long as the “Regime Change” policy is not implemented and performed. Regime change might be a far fetched idea now but it is up to us, concerned citizens, to do it. It’s up to us to support the endless struggle of the people of Iran to bring down the religious maniacs in Tehran.

No, it’s not the “only way,” and it’s not even a good way.  The best way is to finish that 2% completed project that our supposedly-interested-in-stopping-terrorism President doesn’t want done.

Reuters:

Hopes and concerns as EU lifts borders

A minute after midnight on Thursday, the EU will lift border checks with nine of its newest members, setting aside the last remainders of the Iron Curtain in a move some fear could make life easier for criminals.

Travelers will be able to drive from Warsaw to Porto or Prague to Paris without showing their passport, when the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Lithuania, Latvia, Malta, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia join the border-free zone on December 21.

(snip)

A recent poll showed 75 percent of Austrians believe extending Schengen to the EU’s borders with Russia, Ukraine, Belarus and the Balkans will result in more crime. More than half opposed the move.

Hundreds of German policemen marched through Frankfurt on Oder on the Polish border last month to protest. “When the border disappears, the radius for criminals increases,” said Ruediger Holecek, spokesman for the German police union.

MORE CRIME?

French criminologist Xavier Raufer said the EU was not serious about ensuring its security and did not do enough to coordinate police action. “Adding 9 more countries … only adds to this fundamental problem,” he told Reuters.

Actually, crime could increase in the other direction:  French and German non-whites could pour into Eastern Europe and wreak havoc there.

Immigration is big in New Hampshire, a state largely unaffected by the illegal alien invasion.  And now the AP admits it’s a racial issue — see the end of the sixth paragraph.

Perhaps it doesn’t seem that it is directly affecting New Hampshire, but it really is if you think about it.  Many NH residents are suburban/exurban Bostonites.  Get the picture?

From the article:

“You’ve got all these different facets of this issue, which is just primed and ready to go off,” said Smith, whose most recent poll also had immigration as the number two issue for New Hampshire Republicans.

It doesn’t matter that New Hampshire has little direct experience.

This would seem to violate Patterson’s First Axiom, but if a place that doesn’t seem to be affected still has a lot of anti-invasion feelings, then it means that the place probably is affected in a roundabout way.

UK Daily Mail:

Police ‘persecute the middle classes’ to hit Government crime targets

The middle classes are being persecuted so police can chase Government crime targets, the head of the Police Federation says today.

Jan Berry says targets imposed by Whitehall have distorted police priorities, encouraging officers to arrest people for minor offences instead of investigating serious crime.

‘There has been a sense of persecuting middle England in order to make the statistics look good’, she said.

(snip)

Mrs Berry says police are concentrating minor offences speeding offences and public order offences when they should take into account the quality as well as quantity of crimes.

(snip)

Sir Ronnie Flanagan found that police were too busy chasing children accused of playground fights to do their job properly and did not always act in the ‘public interest’.

His report was scathing about the way police forces are obliged to chase targets for catching a fixed number of offenders each year, regardless of their crime

Government rules mean punishing a child involved in a schoolyard scuffle carries the same weight as arresting a burglar, rapist or killer.

Ridiculous examples given by rank-and-file police include the case of a Cheshire man who was cautioned for being ‘found in possession of an egg with intent to throw’.

In Kent, a child was arrested for throwing a slice of cucumber from a tuna sandwich at another youngster.

It’s “anarchy” because the cops are too scared or neutered to go after the real thugs, and “tyranny” because they do harass people holding cucumbers and eggs, and our leviathan punishes someone who sawed off a shotgun 0.25-inch too far and didn’t pay the $5 transfer tax thereof by assassinating his wife, infant child and dog.

MSNBC:

CHIMALTENANGO, Guatemala - Tattoos, baggy pants and tank tops are out. Smart blazers and university recruits are in.

It’s an extreme makeover for Central America’s gangs. Facing harsh crackdowns by government security forces and citizen vigilante groups, they are trying to lower their profile.

The Mara 18 and Mara Salvatrucha gangs are known throughout Central America and the U.S. for their brazen tactics, including beheading their enemies and covering entire buildings and even their bodies with gang symbols.

Now, according to anti-gang operatives, these traditionally uneducated and aimless youth have begun recruiting high school and college students, and are expanding their criminal repertoire from minor robbery to large-scale extortion, prostitution, car theft and kidnappings.

If we’re to believe the leftist canard that poverty causes crime and education cures all, then MS-13, Mara 18 and the gang of gangs wouldn’t even try to recruit students.

This writer opposes “baggy pants” ordinances on Constitutional grounds, but this story is an outlet to another reason why those ordinances won’t do any good. It doesn’t matter if the gangsters are wearing ties or tats, or is wearing his pants at the waist or at the knees. It’s like putting lipstick on a pig.

“We want to take away the opportunity to steal a weapon and use it against someone. Bad guys don’t go out and purchase guns, we know that. We take it out of the bad guys’ homes and take it out of homes where people have children,” said St. Louis Police Sgt. Perri Johnson.

Lost in this story about former Arkansas Governor and current Presidential Candidate Mike Huckabee rapping President Bush for his foreign policy arrogance (Pot-Kettle-Black Alert: He did so in an article in the CFR’s Foreign Affairs magazine):

Huckabee has previously joked about his lack of experience in international affairs. “I may not be the expert as some people on foreign policy, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night,” he said earlier this month.

Huh? What does this mean? Does this mean he thinks that a lot of foreigners stay at a Holiday Inn Express? Or maybe he thinks that foreigners own them. I thought this kind of thing was anti-Christian racism and bigotry, Mikey. You know, that one part of the Bible you love to quote so much, and interpret creatively, demands that we welcome foreigners so heartily that we dispossess ourselves of our own country?

What’s good for the goose of the agricultural processing facilities in Arkansas is good for the gander of Iowa motels.

UPDATE 12/16:  Call off the dogs.  A regular reader e-mailed here stating the “Holiday Inn Express” line is Huck parroting their TV commercials, that state “I may not be (fill-in-the-blank), but I stay at Holiday Inn Express.” It has nothing to do with immigration or any of the assorted -phobias and -isms  that the left and Huckabee himself wail about.

One can’t blame anyone who is an overly sensitive egalitarian and hasn’t seen these commercials who comes away with the impression that I did.

ICE knocks back the New Haven, Conn. community action offices that hand out Federal heating assistance grants, because they gave these grants to illegal aliens.

Could it be that they got those grants because the city gave them official ID cards?

It’s a nice start for ICE to raid the community action office, but why don’t they or the FBI knock back New Haven City Hall and haul in those who voted to give illegal aliens those ID cards?  After that, raid every city hall of every sanctuary city, and arrest the politicians that voted to make them so.
