I Thought Its Purpose Was to Solve Crime, Not Create More of It November 15, 2007

St. Louis Post-Dispatch:

An 18-year-old St. Louis Public School student was shot this morning while he was sitting in a car parked in front of his school 10 minutes before classes began, police said.

Witnesses told police that the student, who police would not identify, was sitting in the car at 8:20 a.m., when two men drove up next to the car and fired several shots at him. One of the bullets struck the student in the throat.

(snip)

The student was in the “In It 2 Win” program that helps high school drop outs get their diploma. The program is held in the former Turner Middle School building at 2615 Billups Avenue in the city.

(snip)

The other approximately 50 students in the program were sent home for the morning session, but classes were held this afternoon.

“In It 2 Win” was in the news last month.  Note that Rep. Nasheed said that this program was necessary to reduce crime, and that the solicitation program she spearheaded canvassed 2,000 young men and women that were high school dropouts, yet there were only 50 takers.  With a 2.5% success rate using what resources they have, imagine the success they could have if only you gave them a bigger budget.  And crime would go way down, too.

KSDK-5 news tonight at 5:  The St. Louis County Circuit Attorney’s office received a letter today threatening violence against the prosecutors, judges and jurors in the recently-concluded trial that found Kevin “Rock Head” Johnson of Meacham Park guilty of first-degree murder of Kirkwood P.D. Sgt. William McEntee, and sentenced him to death for the murder.  The letter also threatened the Kirkwood P.D. itself.

The U.S. Post Office Inspection Service is investigating, along with the Kirkwood P.D., for obvious reasons, and curiously, the St. Louis City Police Department is also investigating.  Since Rock Head never had any criminal dealings in the city, I take this to mean that the threatening letter was mailed from the city.  That said, I have some suspects in mind — and thinking about streets with names like Cherokee, Minnesota, etc.

We’ve Heard That Canard Before November 15, 2007

About this news.

KSDK-NBC-5:

The St. Louis City Health Department is doing damage control, dispelling what it calls a big error.

It comes after an alarming report suggesting the city is leading the nation in gonorrhea and chlamydia rates — at least that’s the impression many were left with after a St. Louis Post-Dispatch headline on Wednesday. The headline read “St. Louis Leads Nation in Rate of Two STDs.”

“I was a little frustrated with the headline because it’s very misleading,” said acting city health director Pam Walker.

Walker believes the problem was a misinterpretation of the actual rankings. She said St. Louis is not looked at the same as most other cities.

“You are comparing a core city to places like San Diego County. To say St Louis is worse off than Chicago or LA is not reality,” Walker said.

Didn’t we hear this CYA canard from Mayor Slay about St. Louis and its “Most Dangerous City” ranking a while back?  Once again, these rankings compared and ranked actual cities, not metropolitan areas.

Montgomery Advertiser:

Restoration experts managed to remove some of the paint sprayed on the Confederate monument at the Capitol but are expecting a tougher time to get the graffiti off its limestone base.

The vandalism occurred sometime Saturday night and was discovered early Sunday by Capitol Police, who are continuing to investigate the crime.

Both the 109-year-old monument and the grounds of the Capitol are lit at night. A spokeswoman with the Department of Public Safety could not say if security cameras surround the monument.

All of the faces and hands on the four figures were painted black. Painted on the base are “N.T. 11 11 31,” which Confederate veteran groups say refers to the slave Nat Turner, hanged on Nov. 11, 1831, for starting a rebellion in Virginia.

“It’s really a heinous thing for somebody to vandalize a soldiers monument particularly on Veterans Day weekend,” said George Gayle of the Sons of Confederate Veterans. “It’s kind of a slap in the face to all veterans really.”

Yes, it is a heinous thing.  And if you want to find someone or something on which to lay part of the moral blame, go to the west side of the Capitol, on top of Goat Hill, look to the southwest, and find the really big, tacky, gawdy building that looks out-of-place and out-of-character for Montgomery.
