Her Words Make Sense, When One Finally Understands the Context November 7, 2007

Remember HRC’s two-faced squirming last week at the Philadelphia debates about New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s plan for drivers licenses for illegal aliens?  She claimed that Spitzer had no choice to do this because of President Bush’s “failure” to shove “Comprehensive Immigration Reform” down our throats.

Most people saw it as a contrived excuse, but I think it’s actually a consistent statement when you understand the context.

If the state of New York grants drivers’ licenses to illegal aliens, then every state will have to recognize them.  And because of the comity (full faith and credit) provisions in the Federal Constitution, and state laws, a NY license will mean that any other state will give you a license if you “move” there.  (Though the reality is that illegal aliens from all other states will flood into NY, get a license there, and then go back to their “home” state and transfer it into a legit drivers’ license there.)  And drivers’ licenses are a gateway to doing everything a citizen can do (including voting), even if you’re not literally a citizen.

Therefore, New York granting drivers’ licenses to illegal aliens in New York would be the functional equivalent to amnesty for illegal aliens in all fifty states.  No wonder HRC equivocated Spitzer’s action to the failed Federal “immigration reform.”
