Where the Minorities Are August 6, 2007

The website ersys.com has a service that shows a race-demographic map of major American metro areas. From the front, you pick a state, hit Go, then choose a “Metro” from the list of links near the outline map of the state you chose.
Then you will see something like this for St. Louis.
This color-coded map does not surprise me, though since it is based on the 2000 U.S. Census, some of the “gray” has spread further into south St. Louis, and further westward into Florissant. Also, some parts of south St. Louis should have some red (Hispanic) spots based on Hispanic population growth in certain city neighborhoods since 2000.
Where this service is problematic is that you only have white, black, Hispanic and Asian. What about metro areas like Detroit and Phoenix, which have a lot of Arabs? I think/fear that they classify Arabs as white, so those maps aren’t very useful in telling you where the Arabs are.
This service is ideal for those in the market to purchase real estate, and real estate agents are prohibited from stating the racial composition of a neighborhood in which they are handing properties for sale. That’s based on the curious theory that real estate agents were somehow “steering” whites to white census tracts, thereby “segregating” blacks and causing their poverty and ignorance, though the paradox of it all is that, if one believes the egalitarian ideology that gave fruit to this laws, then it shouldn’t matter where blacks, whites, Hispanics live, and it shouldn’t matter if they lived in mixed neighborhoods or “segregated” enclaves — the races should all be equal in intelligence, academic achievement and economic prosperity.
With this service, you can see what lives in the neighborhood before you sign the paperwork.

Senior lawmakers want a closer look at bonuses for government bigwigs, after a recent study showed two out of three federal executives were awarded hefty bonuses last year.
“This is beginning to look a lot like Garrison Keillor’s Lake Wobegon, where all the children are above average,” said Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D.
Where you have a governmental bureaucracy, you’re going to have a lot of non-whites and a lot of affirmative action. I suspicion that a lot of this tendency to hand out bonuses like candy is based on racial favoritism, i.e non-white or white liberal bosses either having racial solidarity or racial pity for non-whites they supervise.
If Democrat Byron Dorgan supports affirmative action, then he has no moral authority to complain.

New York City officials have not been open or candid, critics say, about a controversial public school set to open in Brooklyn next month that will teach Arab language and culture — the Khalil Gibran International Academy.
A local group, Stop the Madrassa Community Coalition, fears the school will become a Muslim-oriented school that promotes a religious and political agenda to its incoming sixth-grade class.
Administrators have claimed otherwise, but the coalition has received few details about the school’s curriculum, faculty, textbooks and students, so its questions are still unanswered.
The suspicions are fueled by comments made by the school’s incoming principal, Debbie Almontaser, as well as by some of her allegedly radical Islamist associations.
She has said, for instance, that U.S. foreign policy is “racist” and that the U.S. “triggered” terrorism by not being a fair mediator in the Middle East.
(snip)
The school is not religious and will be shut down if it becomes religious, said Joe Klein, chancellor of the New York City Department of Education, in several news accounts.
“It would be against the Constitution for a public school to teach a religion,” Melody Meyer, spokeswoman for the city’s Department of Education told Cybercast News Service. “Religion will not be affecting the curriculum.”
Really? Have any of you ever read World Net Daily, Cybercast News Service, Jihad Watch or Dhimmi Watch at least once? If you did, you would know that, since September 11, 2001, Islam has become the de facto official religion of the Great American Public Schools. A Christian couldn’t do 1% of the things that Muslims do (or that are done by others on behalf of Muslims) in public schools of late without the entirety of the civil libertarian and paranoia-industrial complex alphabet gang complaining about “separation between church and state.”
Brooklyn Judge: No “Hate” Needed to Commit a Hate Crime August 6, 2007

New York Times:
Three men arrested in the death of a gay man who was beaten and then struck by a car during an October robbery attempt can be charged with hate crimes without evidence that they were motivated by hatred for gay men, a judge ruled yesterday.
The judge, [*****] of State Supreme Court in Brooklyn, said in a written order that prosecutors need show only that the victim was chosen because of his sexual orientation to pursue charges under the state’s Hate Crimes Act of 2000. The law provides for longer sentences on conviction for crimes motivated by racial, religious and other characteristics of a victim.
The case concerns the killing of Michael Sandy, 29, a gay man who was lured to a meeting place in Sheepshead Bay last October, then driven a short distance to Plumb Beach, where he was beaten and chased into traffic on the Belt Parkway. He later died of his injuries.
The defendants, John Fox, Anthony Fortunato and Ilya Shurov, none older than 21, were charged with murder as a hate crime. Prosecutors said the men had contacted Mr. Sandy through a gay online chat room, selecting him because “this was an easy way to rob someone,” according to court documents.
In other words, all one needs to do to commit a hate crime is to select a victim based on certain factors, not actually have any enmity for him or her based on those factors.
This is important because in the case of Christian and Newsom in Knoxville, the standard response from the left and black militants is that nobody should say that these were hate crimes, because there isn’t any evidence that the black suspects hated the white victims for their race. Now we know that the legal threshold (at least in New York State) isn’t that high; all one needs to prove is that the suspects selected the victims because they were white. That might be much easier to prove in court in the trial of these suspects of the murders of Christian and Newsom.
Fashion Savvy August 6, 2007

Private schools first imported the British tradition of student uniforms to mark a student’s social status, Brunsma says. Urban public schools began to adopt uniforms in the late 1980s to reduce social pressure from fashion-savvy students.
“Social pressure from fashion-savvy students.” PC newspeak for gang colors, violence and activity, I see.
